Guest Post at Jencey Gortney’s Writer’s Corner

Huge thanks to Jencey Gortney for asking me to guest post on her blog today! Here’s a taste, but you can find the whole thing over at jenceywrites.blogspot.com.

Have you ever wondered how Cinderella would feel ten years down the road, when her iconic ball gown no longer fit and she had four kids, royal duties up the wahzoo, and a husband who was hardly ever around?

And what about Beauty? After all, her husband was quite a jerk before he became a monster. Too hung up on looks to let a little old fairy in from the rain! Once his curse broke, how long would it take for “Beast” to go right back to his old ways? When would he realize there were a million other “beauties” in the sea … and it’s good to be the king.

These are the kind of questions that can drive a girl crazy. And as someone who can’t watch a movie without making a million “that-would-never-work” remarks, they’ve been driving me crazy for years! Click here to read the full article at jenceywrites.blogspot.com

New Canaan’s first female editor rethinks ‘happily ever after’

Here’s a link to the great article that appeared in last week’s New Canaan Advertiser. It’s Desperately Ever After’s first official press, so please forgive me for being giddy ;)

Where to find me this week — and Desperately Ever After’s first press!

Check out luxuryreading.com for a feature about Desperately Ever After and a giveaway.

And if you live in the NY/CT area, snag a copy of this week’s New Canaan Advertiser (on news stands through February 26). Reporter Aaron Marsh did a terrific job capturing the essence of Desperately Ever After–and proving men can like it too! My favorite line: “Kenyon’s colorful imagery and often quick, lighthearted style makes it easy to keep flipping pages.” To Marsh and everyone else, I say, flip away!

Cover Reveal and the first Desperately Ever After giveaway!

It’s finally here! The highly anticipated (at least on my end!) reveal for the cover of Desperately Ever After, which hits the cyber shelves at Amazon February 1!

I have to thank the wonderful Hazel Gaynor once again for directing me to Andrew Brown’s Design for Writers. He did a great job tackling my desire for a whimsical and fantastical–but not too girly–design. Yes, there is pink, but we tried to offset it with the orange sky and the deep red font, about which a dear friend said: “The crimson reminds me of blood and thus I feel the desperation.” That still makes me laugh.

Plus, the book Andrew designed for Hazel went on to sell close to 100,000 copies before William Morrow stepped in and gave her two-book/reprint deal. So there’s that…

On Desperately Ever After — Part II

Now that I’ve pontificated about what my debut novel is NOT (click here to view On Desperately Ever After — Part I), perhaps I should explain what I was trying to accomplish in the first place.

Like so many women today, I grew up on Disney movies and fairy tales. According to my mother, I saw The Little Mermaid in theaters at least a dozen times (take that, Titanic!), and I definitely made my family listen to every sing-along I could find during our four-hour drives to Cape Cod (sorry guys). Even as late as high school, my friends and I often debated (sometimes quite contentiously) which of us was Sleeping Beauty, Jasmine, Ariel (me), Snow White, etc. The designations we came up with were based purely on looks, of course, but isn’t that pretty much how the princes determined their true loves anyway?

Then… shocker… I grew up. I got to know the real world. Continue reading

On Desperately Ever After – Part I

An illustrátion by Warwick Goble for Beauty and the Beast, 1913.

An illustration by Warwick Goble for Beauty and the Beast, 1913.

Over the past few months, I’ve fielded dozens of questions about my book, the writing process, and what in the heck I’ve been doing with my life besides freelancing, baking, and taking care of my overgrown puppy. Over the last week, since turning my online portfolio site into a brand spanking new blogsite, I’ve also gotten loads of good wishes, messages of support, and much prodding for more details about the story behind Desperately Ever After.

First off, I want to thank everyone who’s shown interest. It’s simultaneously thrilling and terrifying to finally be putting this story out there, but your support makes it a heck of a lot easier.

Second, since I could go on (and on and on) about Desperately Ever After, I’m going to break the explanations into a series of blog posts. This way you don’t go blind from staring at the computer screen too much,  Shadow (the aforementioned overgrown puppy) gets to drag me outside for a little bit, and I delay carpal tunnel for a bit longer. Everyone wins. Continue reading

Where’s the Love? Blog Hop

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I’m participating in the fabulous Heather Webb’s “Where’s the Love?” blog hop. Squishing a meaningful amorous scene into 250 words is tough… so I did the best I could. Please read, leave comments, and then hop around to the other writers’ sites (scroll down) and do the same for them. With every comment comes a chance to win chocolate!!

Note: This is from my current WIP, the second book in the Desperately Ever After series, so didn’t want to give too much away! DEA is currently being shopped to publishers by Michelle Brower of Folio Literary Management.

My Blog Hop Contribution:

Belle waited for the punch line to his compliment. When none came, she looked up to see Gray staring at her. His entire body seemed tilted and his eyes – wide and stormy now – pulsated in time to her heartbeat.

“Would you mind closing the doors a bit?” she asked, motioning to the fireplace. Continue reading
